Heartburn is often a burning and uncomfortable burning sensation that is felt around the chest area. It is felt just behind the breastbone that typically felt in waves. The pain may start at the chest area that often makes it way to the jaw, neck and throat areas. The pain becomes excruciating when the patient lies down or bends and this happens almost immediately after eating.

This condition is medically known as acid indigestion. This is quite common and could be a symptom of serious ischemic heart disease. Despite the fact that it has the name of heartburn it has no direct link to the heart. Getting heartburns should not be a cause of concern. Lifestyle changes can help people avoid getting heartburns. A medication that is available over-the-counter can help people get over the discomfort without the need of seeing a doctor.

Eating smaller and more frequent meals can help a person with heartburn. This may help ease the pressure on the esophageal sphincter which can exacerbate the risk of reflux into the esophagus. Slow down on acid-making foods and drinks as it will help you avoid heartburn. While foods rarely cause heartburn it pays to avoid it.
